Program Overview
Welcome From the Program Directors
The Pathology Residency Training Program was initially based in the San Diego County Hospital (1964) and later expanded when the University opened its School of Medicine in 1968. Training in our program takes place at multiple sites, including the UCSD Jacobs Medical Center, the UCSD Center for Advanced Laboratory Medicine (CALM) and the Veterans' Administration San Diego Healthcare System, all in La Jolla, CA, as well as at the UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest near downtown San Diego. Other rotations are offered at our primary affiliated institutions: Rady Children's Hospital of San Diego, Kaiser-Permanente, and the Office of the San Diego County Medical Examiner.
The strength of our program lies not only in the diversity of case material that results in our exceptional core training curriculum, but also in the commitment and expertise of our faculty.
Our ACGME accredited program offers 19 residency positions and multiple training tracks. The majority of our residents participate in our four-year combined training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. We also offer a four-year combined Anatomic and Neuropathology (AP/NP) track, a three-year Anatomic Pathology (AP Only) track and a three-year Clinical Pathology (CP Only) track. On average, we accept five new residents per year. Our open positions are not track-specific. Of our 19 positions, we typically have three or four residents in our AP/NP, AP only or CP Only tracks.
We are glad you are here! Please explore the information available on this site to learn more about our curriculum, training sites, trainees, faculty and fellowships.
