Chair's Message

Pathology is a vibrant department in the UC San Diego Health Sciences.  Our faculty teach students in not only the School of Medicine but also the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.  Because the UC San Diego School of Medicine includes only two independent basic science departments (Pharmacology and Cellular and Molecular Medicine), Pathology thrives as a true hybrid clinical/basic science department.  Our clinical faculty provide state of the art clinical services in the Divisions of Anatomic Pathology, Neuropathology, and Laboratory and Genomic Medicine.  At the same time, the Department of Pathology is home to many basic scientists with extraordinary research programs that are not directly linked to our clinical activities.

The Residency Program is a cornerstone in the Department of Pathology.  To optimize training opportunities for our residents, we offer numerous specialized fellowships in all three clinical divisions.  We seek to train future leaders in Pathology, not only for academic positions but also for the private sector.  Please visit our webpages to learn more.

The Department of Pathology Research enterprise is highly regarded nationwide. In addition to individual research laboratories, which are described in this site, Pathology is home to the leadership of multiple Interdepartmental Research Centers of Excellence including The Center for Perinatal Discovery, The Center for Transplantation Science, and the Pandemic Application Laboratory and Microbiology Service.  Pathology also serves as home for the UC San Diego Comparative Pathology and Medicine Program.  Numerous graduate students, post-doctoral research fellows, and undergraduate students are important members of our Pathology Department investigational team. Please visit individual faculty websites to learn more about research opportunities in the Department of Pathology.

Diversity, inclusion, and wellness are important concepts in the Department of Pathology.  By attending to these principles, we seek to optimize excellence in our missions.
