Gynecologic Pathology Service
About the Service
The Gynecologic Pathology Service at the UC San Diego is comprised of faculty members whose activities include clinical practice, teaching, and translational research related to the female genital tract.
Pathologists of the Gynecologic Pathology Service perform diagnostic histopathologic examination of female reproductive organs, inclusive of the ovary, fallopian tube, uterus, cervix, vagina and vulva. Our team members are board certified pathologists with expertise on the full spectrum of non-neoplastic and neoplastic diseases, including pathologic correlates of uterine bleeding disorders, endometriosis, benign neoplasms, precancers, cancers, inflammatory disorders, and gestational trophoblastic diseases, among others. An emphasis is placed on routine examination, clinicopathologic correlation, cytohistologic correlation, and the use of ancillary diagnostic techniques such as histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, cytogenetic and molecular analyses to achieve the most accurate and precise diagnosis possible. We also highlight disease states, phenotypes or tumors that may be an indicator of an underlying heritable syndrome, and/or which may influence therapeutic options. Pathologists evaluate specimens generated from the various UC San Diego Health Medical Centers and Clinics, as well as those that are sent to UC San Diego from extramural Medical Centers for a second opinion or for continuity of patient care.
Education and Research Contributions
The Gynecologic Pathology Service plays a vital role in the education of pathology residents, medical students, visiting scholars, and surgical pathology fellows. Furthermore, there is a highly competitive comprehensive Gynecologic/Breast pathology fellowship program wherein a fellow gains intensive exposure to surgical pathology of the breast and gynecologic tract over the course of a year.
Our pathologists conduct translational research that involve diseases of the female reproductive tract, with an emphasis on neoplasms. Our pathologists hold positions in premier professional organizations and frequently serve as guest lecturers and speakers at national and international pathology meetings. They publish extensively in leading pathology journals and have authored numerous books and book chapters in the field of gynecologic pathology, including in the most recent edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Female Genital Tract Tumors.
We are available for consultation on all aspects of Gynecologic Pathology.
