Welcome to the UCSD Pathology Residency Program

The Pathology Residency Training Program was initially based in the San Diego County Hospital (1964) and later expanded when the University opened its School of Medicine in 1968. The program’s two primary training sites are the UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest near downtown San Diego, and the Veterans Administration Medical Center in La Jolla (officially named the Veterans’ Administration San Diego Health Care System: VASDHCS). Elective rotations are offered at our primary affiliated institutions: Children's Hospital of San Diego, Kaiser-Permanente, the Office of the San Diego County Medical Examiner, Scripps Clinic, and the Naval Regional Medical Center.

The strength of our program lies not only in the diversity of case material that results in our exceptional core training curriculum, but also in the commitment and expertise of our faculty.

Our program offers eighteen positions for combined training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and one position in Neuropathology—all three of which provide the context for outstanding training during residency. While the combined four-year program is the preferred route for most residents, there are also straight Clinical Pathology or straight Anatomic Pathology programs available.

In addition, residents can receive specialized training in various fellowship programs such as Surgical Pathology, Neuropathology, Hematopathology, and Forensic Pathology.

We welcome your interest in our training program and look forward to your exploring this web site to learn about our program. If you have any immediate questions, please feel free to contact our Residency Program Manager Joyce McHugh at jpmchugh@ucsd.edu or 619.543.5966.

With best wishes,
