Welcome to UCSD

Department of Pathology

We are living in a spectacular time for the field of Pathology. Available information on the human genome and on the genomes of other species has empowered us to re-define the diagnosis of disease and establish new therapies at an unprecedented rate. The structure of the School of Medicine at UCSD, is particularly advantageous for the development of an extraordinary Pathology Department. Because the medical school has only two other basic science departments, we are called upon to function as a true hybrid basic science/clinical department.

We provide Pathology services for three hospitals in the San Diego area: UCSD-Hillcrest Medical Center, Thornton Hospital, and the La Jolla VA Hospital. We collaborate closely with La Jolla Childrens Hospital. Our three outstanding clinical divisions, anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, and neuropathology, provide the context for exceptional residency training, leading to AP, CP, AP-CP, or AP-NP eligibility. Please visit our website for residency training, through the direct link above this message, to obtain detailed information on our residency programs. If you are a practicing pathologist, the UCSD Pathology Department is interested in collaborating with you. We have a growing reference laboratory enterprise, with the capacity to provide advanced testing to support patient diagnosis nationally. Our Anatomic Pathologists have an active consultation practice. More information regarding our patient care is available by the direct link.

Basic and translational research laboratories in the UCSD Pathology Department tackle important problems concerning cancer progression, angiogenesis, neurodegenerative diseases, peripheral nerve regeneration, inflammation, infectious disease, and wound healing. Our laboratories provide excellent environments for learning cell biology, molecular genetics, biochemistry, and animal physiology. For this reason, our Department is the centerpiece of an inter-institutional Ph.D. graduate program, called the Molecular Pathology graduate program. The direct link on this page will connect you to the home page for the Molecular Pathology Ph.D. program. We also have excellent opportunities for postdoctoral researchers. Open positions are listed by direct link. Also, please visit the individual web pages for each of our faculty to view specific research interests. The Department of Pathology is home to an outstanding Comparative Pathology and Medicine Program (direct link above) and the UCSD Research Ethics Program. We provide major educational support to the School of Medicine and the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. We also have, under development, a medical technology program, which can be accessed under medical education. Further information on all these training opportunities is available through the link to medical education.

The La Jolla/San Diego community is a fertile environment for research and the pharmaceutical industry. The Burnham Institute, the Scripps Research Institute, the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center , the Salk Institute, and the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology house exciting scientific programs and provide for numerous scientific collaborations. We also boast a plethora of biotechnology companies, located nearby on the La Jolla mesa.
