Neuropathology:
The Department of Pathology offers a two-year residency (fellowship) in neuropathology which is accredited separately and fully through the ACGME and available to any resident who has completed two years of anatomic pathology training. Residents train to pass the American Board of Pathology examinations in this sub-specialty. The Division of Neuropathology has responsibility for brain, nerve, and muscle biopsies as well as for neuropathologic autopsies. Neuropathology also handles similar material from community hospitals throughout San Diego County.
Faculty who direct the program seek to provide an environment that links each facet of the resident's training in diagnostic neuropathology, light and electron microscopy, and related techniques to opportunities to develop communications skills, master the literature, and discover outlets for intellectual creativity. These activities are supplemented by regular gross and microscopic review sessions and a monthly journal club. Neuropathology enjoys close working relationships with the Department of Neurosciences and the Department of Surgery, Division of Neurosurgery. The service and educational needs for all three divisions are met by monthly joint conferences. House staff from these divisions as well as from the Division of Anatomic Pathology, rotate through the service for one to two month periods. Additionally, our programs close affiliation with the Department of Neurosciences promotes excellent research opportunities. Eight salaried faculty members in the Division of Neuropathology, under the direction of Dr. Scott VandenBerg, are committed to assisting the investigative efforts of neuropathology residents.

Research Fellowship:
The UCSD Pathology Residency Program encourages applications from MD-PhD and other research-oriented residents. We also recognize the need of many applicants to continue their research training while pursuing residency training. Fortunately, our Department and University boasts many top-notch research laboratories, which emphasize translational research. To facilitate the development of the physician-scientist, we offer fellowship program in which residents are allowed to spend up to a full year in a research laboratory, with salary support guaranteed by the Department. Additional years of research may be funded by extramural grants or by the Principal Investigator. These special department fellowships are offered on a competitive basis; however, a commitment may be obtained during the recruitment process. Please feel free to mention your interest in this program when applying. We look forward to working with you.
Post Sophomore Medical Student Fellowship:

This fellowship provides medical students the opportunity to perform as first year pathology residents. Emphasized are developing skills as a diagnostic pathologist using state-of-the-art technology. The content of the program, which includes both anatomic and clinical pathology, can be tailored to the needs of the individual. Fellows will be taught and supervised by highly skilled faculty with well-defined areas of expertise. This fellowship provides an outstanding opportunity to expand knowledge of pathology and medicine in an academic setting rich in clinical and research activity. We invite talented medical students who have completed their preclinical training at any accredited US medical school to apply.
STIPEND: Trainees receive a $15,000 stipend annually.
